What is your current occupation? What is your background?
I am currently an instructor in the Education Department at Lone Star College - Montgomery.
Previously I have been an assistant principal, a classroom teacher, a Soldier in the United States Army, a cadet at Texas A&M University, and a sacker at Klein’s Supermarket.
How many years have you been in the Tomball area?
My parents moved our family to Tomball in 1986 and enrolled me in Tomball Elementary School. Tomball ISD was my parents’ number one incentive for that move. With the exception of my years serving in the United States Army and the time I was a student at Texas A&M University, I have lived in Tomball ever since.
What makes you a qualified candidate for TISD school board?
If elected, I will be the only Trustee who has worked as a classroom teacher or campus administrator. I will also be the only Trustee with a master’s degree in education. This is a degree that emphasizes school administration and organization, effective leadership strategies, campus business management, and federal, state, and local school regulations in addition to providing the skills necessary to evaluate programs for overall school improvement, implement research to improve instruction and curricula, and understand how diverse populations and special programs affect a school and its community.
Our current School Board of Trustees is an incredibly successful group of men and women who have an impressive diversity of skillsets that are vital to the successful governing of the school district, but not one of the Board members has ever walked a mile in the shoes of our teachers. I believe there should be at least one member of the Tomball ISD School Board who has had to plan a lesson, gather materials, manage behavior in a classroom, administer a state mandated test, grade mountains of assignments on nights and weekends, and everything else our teachers do. I have done all of these things, and I feel qualified to speak to the effects that proposed Board decisions would have on students and teachers in the classroom.
I have a very unique perspective of our school district because of the many roles I have played within it. I have been:
1) A student, starting in Tomball Elementary and finishing at Tomball High School
2) A substitute teacher, at Tomball Elementary, Lakewood Elementary, Rosehill Elementary, Tomball Intermediate, Beckendorf Intermediate, Tomball Junior High, Willow Wood Junior High, and Tomball High School.
3) An assistant principal, at Willow Wood Junior High for four years, followed by a year as an administrator for Special Services working with special needs students at Tomball Memorial High School, Tomball Intermediate, and Decker Prairie Elementary.
This unique perspective is something that only I bring to the table in this election. Other candidates have seen the district from the outside looking in as parents, or as Board Trustees looking down from the top, but I've seen Tomball ISD from inside the trenches, where the boots get muddy. I believe that the things I have experienced over the years will allow me to add important thoughts to all discussions in the board room that would otherwise not be a part of the conversation.

The Land Office's core mission is the management of state lands and mineral-right properties totaling 13 million acres. Included in that portfolio are the beaches, bays, estuaries and other “submerged lands” out to 10.3 miles in the Gulf of Mexico, institutional acreage, grazing lands in West Texas, and timberlands in East Texas. In managing that property, the Land Office issues oil and gas leases and surface leases and sells state land. Sale and lease proceeds from Permanent School Fund lands go into the Permanent School Fund, an endowment for Texas public education. Since the Permanent School Fund was established in 1854, the Land Office has earned more than $13.23 billion for it, mostly from oil and gas leases and real estate sales and trades.
The Land Office also operates all state veterans benefit programs for the Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB). This currently includes three loan programs, which fund over $500 million per year for land and housing, and the Texas State Veterans Homes, which provide more than 1,000 skilled nursing care beds. Four Texas State Veterans cemeteries have been completed in Killeen, Mission, Abilene, and Corpus Christi. As the oldest and most diverse state agency in Texas, Land Office responsibilities cover many other areas. The agency's Archives and Records division houses original Spanish, Mexican, and Republic of Texas land grants. The Adopt-A-Beach program and Coastal Resources and Oil Spill Prevention and Response divisions work to protect our natural resources. The Land Office triggers economic development through its natural gas marketing initiatives, loan programs offered to veterans through the VLB, and investments through commercial transactions involving PSF land.[GLO]

DBC has lived in Harris County, Texas, for 40 of his 51 years. He has observed Houston and Harris County growing in ways both positive and negative. The population of the county has doubled since his arrival in 1966, with people arriving from all over the world, creating a beautiful patchwork quilt of cultures, ideas, and spirits. He has also seen and lived with the effects of urban sprawl, with its heavy dependence on automobiles resulting in deadly air pollution and collisions. Dave's primary focus in this campaign will be a long-term project to turn sprawl into interconnected regional hubs with vastly increased public transit, a county-wide (and eventually regional) expansion of the vision of Houston Tomorrow.
The Basics:
Born in Stillwater, Oklahoma, 13 November 1962
Moved to New Jersey as an infant, then to Houston at age 3; moved away to California and Connecticut since then but returned, and back in Harris County continuously since 1991
Graduate of Cypress Creek High School and Rice University (BA, Classics)
Worked at various times as a high school teacher, taxi driver, airline customer service agent, music retail clerk, résumé writer, IT training consultant, and IT support services analyst
Member, Harris County Green Party, since 2000, but also with the Green Party Organizing Committee beginning in 1997; served on the crew of GreenwatchTV
Veteran of the 2000, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2010 Green Party of Texas petition drives to secure a ballot line in state elections
